Willie Green - The Color of Funky

Many great producers don’t get the face time they deserve, which is why this week I made a trip behind the boards to catch up with beatsmith extraordinaire, Willie Green. Originally from Hartford, CT, but now residing in Brooklyn, there’s a good chance you’ve heard Green’s work, but just don’t realize it. He has production credits on the Super Chron Flight Bros’ latest album, Cape Verde, and on Premonition’s just released The Build. Green’s latest solo release is Dirty Jordans and when he sat down with me we discussed the album, why he likes the idea of dirty, rather than clean, Jordans, and what he has in common with some other famous Willie Greens, including an NBA player and an organic farm. Von Pea "So Motivational: The Most Skullduggery of Mixtapes"
Fresh off of his Sandwich Shop collaboration with fellow Tanya Morgan member Donwill, Von Pea has been keeping himself busy with his own solo project, preparing Pea's Gotta Have It, slated for release September 2010. In order to whet the appetites of awaiting fans, Von Pea releases his free mixtape today, So Motivational: The Most Skullduggery of Mixtapes. Consisting of a selection of new solo tracks and a host of current and past collaborations featuring talented artists like Trackademicks, XV, Che Grand, The Lessondary, and more So Motivational offers listeners a chance to catch up on much of the work Von has been doing outside his work with Tanya Morgan. "This started out as a collection of all of my recent collaborations," explains Von of the mixtape, "but I decided to use the ones that fit best as well as record a few new tracks." The result is a collection of tracks that to come together with fluidity. With "Lookin Fly" featuring Trackademicks and Donwill, the three rap over a funk-inspired Von Pea-produced track, while, elsewhere, "Year Of The Other" finds Von trading verses with fellow emcees Max Mega and Justin Battle over the track's smacking drums, wobbling bass, and hazy synthesizers. The mixtape is also accompanied by special artwork, created by Shake of 2dopeboyz.com/ArtByShake.com. Von Pea's Pea's Gotta Have It will be released September 7th via Interdependent Media. To download Von Pea's new mixtape, So Motivational: The Most Skullduggery Of Mixtapes, visit: http://vonpea.bandcamp.com/ The Background: Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Von Pea has been emceeing since 1991 and producing since 2000. Initially attracted to hip hop by the likes of Another Bad Creation and many other young rappers that were near his own age, Von would eventually shift his interest to those who would become his strongest influences – A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and Biggie. In 2002 Von Pea began an alliance with the original members of North Carolina rap group Little Brother (Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh, and 9th Wonder) which lead him to being featured on such projects as Phonte and Nicolay’s Foreign Exchange Connected album (“Von Sees”), and Little Brother’s The Minstrel Show (“Cheatin” interlude). In addition to his group’s music, Von has released acclaimed projects such as 2003’s “Custom Fitted”, 2007’s “Grand Vonye” and his late 2007 remix project “American Angster” which has been considered one of the best of the Jay Z remix albums. Von Pea is also a member of the rap group Tanya Morgan. Von Pea's latest solo album, Pea's Gotta Have it, will be released September 7th. | Streams: So Motivational: The Most Skullduggery Of Mixtapes: http://vonpea.bandcamp.com/ Bio, pictures, and streams available here: http://www.audibletreats.com/download/vonpea http://www.audibletreats.com/download/tanyamorgan Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TanyaMorganMusic http://www.facebook.com/pages/Von-Pea/8453776837 /> Twitter: http://twitter.com/vonpea MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/vonpea http://www.myspace.com/tanyamorgan Official Site: http://www.vonpea.com/ http://www.tanyamorgan.brooklynati.com/ Brooklynati Chamber Of Commerce: http://www.Brooklynati.com MySpace: Label site: http://www.imculture.com/ |
