Audio: Oddisee - "You Don't Close Your Eyes"

Today marks Mello Music Group's wide release of Oddisee's newest project Odd Seasons, which is now available in both digital and CD format with vinyl on the way! The project is composed of  four seasonal EPs as one 31 track edition.  The Washington DC emcee/producer has grown more confident and relaxed with each release, crafting a distinct brand of Hip Hop.  Last week we opened the campaign for Odd Seasons with an ode to Prince Georges County that debuted in The LA Times: This week, Oddisee takes listeners on another sonic excursion.

You Don't Close Your Eyes  is about the dynamics of a relationship turned cold.  Clever wordplay and an effortless cadence propel this insightful tale of domestic apathy, which finds Oddisee questioning what changed in his relationship: "restaurant parking lots seem like the spot  in the plot where you like to  talk a lot, where it used to be the spot in the plot where the windows was steamed because the heat coming off was hot."   Also along for the ride is frequent collaborator/keyboardist, Ralph Real, whose tenor adds an emotional intensity that helps accentuate the frustrations of unrequited love.

Oddisee has sharpened his technique to a refined point.  Teeming with layers, heartfelt chords flutter from the piano forming inverted triads. Smooth drums and thick, rubbery basslines lend themselves to the mood, subtly moving and shifting as the track builds up steam.  Crisp strings bring it all to a pleasant musical crest.  Oddisee's production is charged with the kind of craftsmanship that's easily digested, yet brimming with complexity for those eager to dive beneath the surface.

Enjoy the song and feel free to post & share!

Video: Stranger Day - "Not Playin'"

Shane Coble aka Stranger Day is no stranger to the party. If there's a gig somewhere in a city or back woods of North Carolina somewhere, you can count on this hell-raisin', whiskey-swiggin' emcee being the main event. Riding off the buzz of his mixtape “Young, Dumb & Dope” (which has amassed 10,000+ downloads), Stanger Day is readying his first collection of songs, Barstool Bounce.

Stranger Day rolls with crew Permanent Vacation, shutting down bars and clubs across the state, and one listen to Barstool Bounceexplains why.  Take the first track “Not Playin,’” Stanger Day’s personal favorite. “It’s theme of the record,” explains Stranger Day. “I don’t buy into labels [ie hipster hip-hop, underground, etc]. I make music on my terms and am not trying to fit into some category.”

But Stranger Day can keep the underground ethics of hip-hop on one track and rock a bounce beat too. On his ode to Southern rap “Moonwalking on the Sun,” producer EMYND creates a head-nodding beat that will have clubs goers shakin’ their booties, bounce style.

A product of the glorious 80s, Shane grew up a regular southern kid, listening to artists like from The Clash, Andre 3000 and Cash Money Millionares  to Company Flow and Hiero. “I loved punk rock, dirty south rap and the backpack underground stuff.”

Production on Barstool Bounce is shared by EMYND, a Philadelphia-based beat maker (Gucci Mane, Diplo, Lil B from The Pack, Finland's Top Billin crew, Them Jeans, Scottie B, Playboy Tre, G-Side and the Paper Route Gangstaz), and DJA, a Los Angeles based in house producer for Mad Decent producer & Co-producer for Diplo.  His production credits include M.I.A, Diplo, Major Lazer, NBA 2k9, GM Hummer, and more.

Video: The Milky Way f/ Chris Clarke - "Black Magic"

From Dunn Deal PR:

Video: The Milky Way f/ Chris Clarke - "Black Magic"

Multi-coastal lyricist Sum - whose Nobody Hole, The Lil Folk and Lone Wolf albums have gained him an international cult following - is leader of The Milky Way, an L.A.-based collective that specializes in a sound best described as post-millennial funk. On bass and keys is P.U.D.G.E., the NYC producer/emcee who made his name at L.A.'s Low End Theory weekly, another member of a lineup that comprises college buddies, play cousins, childhood friends and even a married couple. Also on keys is Computer Jay, who first struck out with a contribution on ArtDontSleep's From LA With Love compilation. X-Man, X-Ro, Taurus Hamilton, DJ Cee Brown, Vocabutrois & Lil Mis round out this gathering of stars. Here they present the video to the title track of their Black Magic EP. "This song is unique because it's the first full song we composed from scratch as The Milky Way, two summers ago," says Sum. "Everything else we'd done up to that was just rehashes of old material. It was the clear winner for our first video, everybody's involved. We brought along talented family, Chris Clarke kickin in the door for us and Chicago's own Airon Azure on the chorus. Pure energy." Director and bandmember Nzinga Kadalie Kemp says "We wanted it to be simple but we wanted it to rock out -- I think we achieved our goal. It's milky." The song is a celebration of a newfound Milky Way sound, and the power of attraction.
