PR: Apollo Brown Gives Back to Youth through School-Based Hip Hop Program

From Urban Scientists:

Los Angeles, California, January 2011 – Detroit-based producer Apollo Brown is giving his time to the students of the Global Awareness through Hip Hop Culture Program, the nation’s first full time educational Hip Hop program for middle and high school students.  Since 2006, the Los Angeles program has been using Hip Hop culture and Rap music as a medium to helps students develop a sense of global awareness and critical thinking skills.

In early December 2010, program founder Sebastien Elkouby gave his students the task of writing lyrics to random Hip Hop instrumentals found on Youtube. As a fan of Apollo Brown, Elkouby recommended some of the producer’s music to his students.  They reacted so enthusiastically that Elkouby decided to contact Apollo and his team to let them know that a group of students almost 2000 miles away was writing to his music.  Elkouby didn’t expect the response.  “Apollo’s team offered to have him reach out to the students through Skype,” he says.  “Apollo reached out to me personally and provided me with more instrumentals to give students.  We decided to have the students use their Christmas break to finish writing and prepare to perform their songs for him via Skype. The students are extremely excited.”  Elkouby adds, “Hip Hop artists are often negatively portrayed in the mainstream media.  Apollo proves that artists give back when given the opportunity to do so.  Hopefully, the media can show the positive side of Hip Hop.”

As for his involvement with the program, Apollo Brown says, “When I first heard about the program I thought it was unbelievable that Hip Hop was being taught in the schools. I was also extremely excited that my music was being used as part the curriculum. It actually gave me inspiration and a certain encouragement that real Hip Hop has a chance with the younger listeners.  I'm definitely eager to talk with the students and learn how my music has affected them in any way and can't wait to hear what each student was inspired to write. I just want them to be open to all kinds of music and not just what they hear on the radio and/or see on TV. Being well rounded is important, even within a specific genre.”

The Global Awareness through Hip Hop Culture program is currently in its 5th year.  Apollo Brown’s Skype session is schedule to take place by the end of January 2011.

Machina Muerte CEO Partners With Wavves Drummer For First Single From New Album

The Song:

Rapper Isaiah Toothtaker is prepping the release of his latest album, Illuminati Thug Mafia, to be released January 25th through a partnership with Toothtaker's own Machina Muerte label and Alpha Pup Records. With Wavves drummer Jacob Safari behind the board, the two flip 2010 internet phenomenon Antoine Dodson’s “Bed Intruder” song upside down. Eschewing the ringtone-y iTunes version for North Carolina A&T’s marching band’s interpretation, Toothtaker and Safari concoct a flurry of horn stabs, soaring sirens, and bullet-ridden rolling percussion that hit like a jab from Toothtaker himself. The song provides a perfectly dark soundscape to match Isaiah’s menacing lyrics and his gruesomely NSFW video.

"Intruder" is the debut single from Isaiah Toothtaker's newest album Illuminati Thug Mafia which is set for release on January 25th via Machina Muerte/Alpha Pup. Run and tell that, homeboy.

The Background:

Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona in a broken home, Isaiah Toothtaker was kicked out at age 11 and quickly learned to defend himself, often resorting to violence. Throughout his violent young adulthood, Isaiah relied on music to identify with and it provided the soundtrack to his teenage antics of stealing cassettes and walkmans and riding the public transport all city to tag, battle rap, sell dime bags and acid tabs, and fist fight. He began tattooing under the tutelage of the local Hells Angels, leading him to open his own parlor, STARING WITHOUT CARING, which has won numerous Best in City awards over the years. Throughout all the trouble, Isaiah has been able to duck or beat charges, until recently, when he landed multiple violent felonies on record. Built from misery and built to destroy, he has since co-founded the label Machina Muerte with Mestizo, the duo also forming the group HUMASUIT. Since 2001, Isaiah has independently released one EP and three full-length albums (one with rapper Murs) and his forthcoming album Illuminati Thug Mafia will be available January 25, 2011 via Machina Muerte/Alpha Pup Records.

(January 11, 2011) New York, NY – Inaugurating the New Year with innovative new music and new media collaborations, platinum recording artist, MIMS returns to the music scene with the release of his much talked about interactive mix cd, OPEN BARS. The first of its kind to integrate unsigned artists and producer participation in its completion, OPEN BARS is a shining example of MIMS’ ingenuity and creativity to effectively engage fans as both an artist and an entrepreneur.  In cooperation with Digiwaxx Media (digiwaxx.com), World Star Hip Hop (worldstarhiphop.com), All Hip Hop (allhiphop.com), Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes (coast2coastmixtapes.com), PMP Worldwide (pmpworldwide.com), All Access Music Conference (allaccessmusicconference.com), Dynamic Producer (dynamicproducer.com), Digital Music News (digitalmusicnews.com), iStandard Producers (istandardproducers.com), and 1 of 1 Media (1of1media.com), the project will debut on January 11, 2011, with the contest portion of the campaign lasting for four weeks.

MIMS, revolutionized ringtone sales in 2007 with his debut single, “This Is Why I’m Hot” and now he is back to once again take the music industry by storm with out of the box innovations. The OPEN BARS EP will be released as part of a larger campaign which will include a global contest for upcoming artists and producers, a new website (www.mimslife.com), a viral ad campaign and partnerships with various top tier, hip-hop websites. The EP itself is composed of unfinished tracks in order to allow artists and producers to compete for the opportunity to be a part of history by finishing the creation. Winning participants’ verses and/or production will be implemented in the final project to be released at a future date and sold exclusively on the iTunes Storefront and marketed through American King Music & DigiwaxxDigital.

“I wanted to interject something into the industry that can directly affect my fans,” says MIMS. “Technology has made it so easy to interact with people on a level never before seen in music. I plan on using that ingenuity and that spirit when completing this project.” MIMS business partner and CEO of Digiwaxx Media, Corey “CL” Llewellyn echoes MIMS sentiments, “Digiwaxx was founded under the pretense of staying ahead of the curve when it comes to music and technology. To be a part of this project is a great experience because it shows the evolution of music and the overall creation process.”

To enter the Open Bars Contact, artists and producers need to obtain the download link at MIMS official website www.mimslife.com and submit their verses and beats to mimsopenbars@gmail.com.  The submissions process begins 1/11/11 and must be received no later than 2/11/11. A panel of seasoned music industry executives will select the best verses for each song and the winning artists will be granted a slot to open up for MIMS at a selected performance in a city near them as well as consideration to be included in accompanying videos. Additionally winners will receive a digital distribution package through Digiwaxx Media and a strategic national marketing and promotion campaign.
