Zion I Release "Many Stylez" Off "Atomic Clock"

* *
October 5, 2010--Just as Zion I are setting off on a massive tour with The Rebelution, and at the same time gearing up for the release of their seventh album, Atomic Clock they're giving away the album's first single, "Many Styles" (which features tour partners Rebelution).  "North Star," another track from the forthcoming album, is available today on iTunes.  Both tracks offer a look at the direction in which the group is headed.

After delving into upbeat, electronic music on 2009's The Takeover, Oakland hip-hop stalwarts Zion I enter a new phase of their chameleonic career with Atomic Clock (November 9th, Gold Dust), a moody, emotional record inspired by the group's longtime admiration for reggae and dub.

While the group's roots are still firmly planted in hip-hop, Atomic Clocks cavernous, atmospheric vibe recalls both the classic roots reggae of Max Romeo and The Congos and forward-thinking dub mixing of UK artists such as Adrian Sherwood. "The Takeover was a very external record and we wanted to focus on fun, party music," says emcee Zumbi AKA Zion. "This one is much more reflective and internal. We didn't want to just recreate what we did last album. Art is not about living in the past."

For Atomic Clock, the duo employed live musicians to flesh out producer Amp Live's original beats and thicken the overall sound. For many of Atomic Clock's tracksAmp would create the skeleton of the beat himself for the initial direction before collaborating with the group's live musicians to complement the sound and, in certain cases, redo the track live. In stark contrast to The Takeover, which saw Amp and Zumbi e-mail verses and beats to each other to constantly tweak each song, the group and their collaborators engaged in days-long jam sessions, for the first time in their career, to best enunciate Amp's initial idea.

For Zumbi, the writing style on Atomic Clock was much more instinctive than on past albums, and the result is a litany of emotionally introspective, brutally honest songs that both relay the emcee's personal experience and delve into weighty topics including the transient nature of time.

This extends to the title. "The Atomic Clock is the most precise timing device on the planet and I thought that applied to the immaculate timing and rhythm it takes between musicians in one room to make good music," says Zumbi. "But also, I feel that time is speeding up on the planet and it seems like it's dilating and contracting really quickly. We're living in such an interesting time and I think time is on everyone's mind in one way or another. Everything is exponential now."

On Atomic Clock, the group employs their usual mix of sonic exploration and unbridled creativity. "4U," with its choir vocals, soulful keyboards, and rock guitars, could be a lost Sly and the Family Stone track, while the horn blasts and heavy, electric guitars of "Always" supplement Zumbi's optimistic hook of "Love conquers always/Gotta keep your head up." "Many Stylez," featuring reggae band Rebelution (the album also features guest spots by emcees Locksmith and Macklemore and vocalists Courtney Holiday and Crystal Monee Hall), deftly defers to the genre's roots, and the atmospheric beat of "North Star" complements the central idea of being open to guidance in one's life.

On "History," the group's most insightful and candid track, Zumbi recalls the duo's autobiography from prior to the group's formation until now. "We've been doing music a long time and sometimes you forget how long you’ve been at and how many places you've been," admits the emcee. "I think it's good to look back for a second before keeping it moving." Keeping it moving is something Zumbi and Amp Live have never had problems doing andAtomic Clock stands as another engaging expression of the group's mind, heart and soul.

Ninja Tune XX : 20 Years of Beats and Pieces

20 Years of Beats and Pieces out today in the US, the pioneering label invades America this October throwing three massive parties in LA, SF, and NYC
Ninja Tune takes over today and unleashes a bunch of new media to celebrate

Out now on CD and included in the Ninja Tune XX box set, the compilation celebrating twenty years looks towards the future showcasing their newest crop of talent as well as todays cutting edge producers paying homage to the label's roots. With too many names to mention and do it all justice (at nearly 100 songs, the box set certainly more), the tracklisting is something that needs to be seen to be believed (see it below). A special occasion, the label has taken over today featuring an interview with founders Coldcut, a compilation of the best Ninja Tune videos, a new mix from Eskmo, and a chance to win the amazing box set.

"Ninja Tune XX feels like both a late (if fond) farewell to the opulent multi-disc box sets of the 20th century and an announcement that Ninja Tune's A&R instincts remain strong enough to survive the craziness of the 21st."
-Pitchfork Media

Ninja Tune has very obviously crafted a love letter to those who have allowed the label to stay in business for 20 solid years, with no sign of slowing down. True to form, they would rather facilitate creation than rehash the past, the result being that Ninja Tune XX is a surprisingly contemporary take on retrospective"

PR: Dee-1 Set to Drop "I Hope They Hear Me: Vol. 2"

From Nancy B:

Dee-1 Set to Drop "I Hope They Hear Me: Vol. 2"

New Orleans, LA - Has the recession ended the 'bling rap' era? Does it signal a return to songs with more substance? Up-and-comer Dee-1  is counting on it. Not to say that he wishes to be placed in the commercially overlooked 'backpacker' rap pack; he'd rather carve his own lane, but Dee-1 didn't take his decision to leave his full-time position as a middle school teacher, to become a full-time music artist, lightly.

David Augustine aka Dee-1 always had a passion for music. After graduating from Louisiana State with a Bachelors in marketing, he began teaching middle school as a way of funding that passion. The strong bond he built with his students, even as his notoriety as a local artist began to grow, made him realize that being Dee-1 gave him a much larger platform to enlighten than being Mr. Augustine and so, his career choice was made.

Since then there has been his highly successful mixtapes, Still We Rise, I Am Who I Am and I Hope They Hear Me, an independent album, David & Goliath (nominated for for Hip Hop Album of the Year by Offbeat magazine) and live performances alongside the likes of Lil Wayne, Drake, Lupe Fiasco, Trey Songz, Akon, Talib Kweli and more, where his star power was evident. Dee-1 was also the first rap act to win the annual Louisiana State University "Battle of the Bands."

Next up for this unapologetic musical educator is his new mixtape, I Hope They Hear Me: Vol. #2, set to drop as a free download later this year. The first single/video for the tape is "Jay, 50 and Weezy", a lyrical challenge from Dee-1 to those he looks up to in the game.

VIDEO: - "Jay, 50 & Weezy" .

Here also are a couple of recent features on Dee-1: -

    * .

The educator in Dee-1 is undeniable. He still frequently mentors youth and is a regular on the lecture circuit. Whether on the stage or in a classroom he has captured not only the ears, but the hearts of young people with his authenticity.

The movement is rolling. Feel free to jump on board.
