Dr. Dre's Son Dies
This news just hit our desk courtesy of BlackVibes.com - Dr. Dre's son has died according to the Los Angeles County Coroner. The body of Andre Young Jr. was found in his Woodland Hills home on Saturday morning. Young went out on Friday night and came in about 5:30 A.M., but his mother found him unresponsive when she checked on him at 10 in the morning. She called 911 immediately. The cause of death will be revealed after a toxicology report. Andre Young Jr. was only 20 years old. Dr. Dre has not released a statement as of yet on his son's death, but we will keep you posted. Our condolences to Dre's family and friends. New 88 Keys Featuring Kanye West Single
Yo! Majesty - Break Bread (Single)
Review by Steve 'Flash' Juon Artist: Yo! Majesty Title: Break Bread Label: Domino Records
"Break Bread" is an unapologetically political song and strong statement from newcomers Shunda K and Jwl. B, better known as Yo! Majesty. Shunda also seems to have some very strong Christian views, such as "If you're feelin' me, imagine a worldwide unity/All nations under he, our mission should bring light to all people." That may come off a little too preachy, and it may not help their cause that the production on the track is decidedly unorthodox - a mixture of exploding beats and noises akin to an electronic banging on pipes. Despite the possibility this could turn off many listeners, I find myself intrigued by Yo! Majesty, perhaps becaue I'm wondering how their pro-black, feminist and Christian views will all come together on an EP entitled "Kryptonite Pussy." Yes, I'm serious, and so apparently are they. Be on the lookout for their full-length album "Futuristically Speaking... Never Be Afraid" on Domino Records.

Review by Steve 'Flash' Juon Artist: Guru f/ Lord Tariq Title: Knowledge Label: 7 Grand/Koch Records It seems Guru has a penchant for rapping over old school breaks these days. After rocking to a Black Moon "Who Got Da Props" remake on "Who Got It On Lock," Guru teams up with Lord Tariq for a track called "Knowledge" that's also eeriely familiar. Just slide one word between "Knowledge," that being THE, and you can take a sip of Rakim's juice - even the scratching leading into the chorus and the background "NOOOO" are the same. Honestly if this is Guru's new gimmick I'm not hating on it, because he's two for two in revisiting my old hip-hop favorites. As long as we're revisiting Rakim I'm hoping sooner or later he'll pull a Buckshot and rap to "I Ain't No Joke," and maybe Buckshot in turn could rap to GangStarr's "Manifest." Everybody should get in on the fun! * http://www.mediafire.com/?mim5bb02ym1 *
Evil Eye f/ Ali Vegas - Purgatory (Single)
Review by Steve 'Flash' Juon Artist: Evil Eye f/ Ali Vegas Title: Purgatory Label: Crown City Records She's been labelled "the first lady of Crown City Records" but that to me just brings back memories of a Bay Area reap group from 2004, and I don't think that's what they were going for. In fact judging by her association with Ali Vegas it seems far more likely this is a duo of rappers from South Jamaica, a fact double-E reveals between verses when she says "Aiyyo Vegas! Show these motherfuckers how we do it in Queens baby." The good news for Evil Eye is that Ali Vegas is highly regarded on the mixtape scene, the bad news for her is he's not very well known outside of it. Vocally Evil Eye is a mixture of Remy Martin and Eve, which makes for a pleasant if somewhat unoriginal delivery. The role of thugged out bitch since to be pretty well filled in hip-hop these days, so it's doubtful she's going to break through in a major way, but the dramatic bombastic beat and Vegas guest appearance should get them some mixtape play. * http://www.mediafire.com/?mmk2wzgymgn *
Ca$his - Put it Up (Single)
Review by Steve 'Flash' Juon Artist: Ca$his Title: Put it Up Label: Shady Records Although the long-awaited "Loose Cannon" full-length album still doesn't have a release date, Ca$his is attempting to build up a little buzz by releasing the Rikanatti produced "Put it Up" to internet buzzmakers and mixtape DJ's. The link for this song was so dirty that it's already expired as of the time I wrote this post, but the good news is you don't need to rush out looking for it. Rik's beat would definitely appeal to a hardcore G-Unit fan,but that just means this song has the sound and feel of an unreleased 50 Cent track without the style and personality of Curtis Jackson to put it over the top. Eminem's production and a guest appearance gave the budding rapper a star-making boost on his debut EP, but without either one here "Put it Up" just makes me want to put it down and move on to the next song. Arabian Prince - Let's Hit the Beach (Single)
Review by Steve 'Flash' Juon Artist: Arabian Prince Title: Let's Hit the Beach Label: Stones Throw Records It's a bit unexpected to say the least. Arabian Prince, the rap artist perhaps best known as a spare tire in the trunk of N.W.A.'s legacy, is suddenly back in the spotlight. He's not releasing new material to get there; rather the Stones Throw Records camp are compiling together the best of his seminal rap songs from 1984-1989 for a new album titled "Innovative Life." The showcase single both parties are releasing from the album is "Let's Hit the Beach," which is a throwback single in every sense of the word. The electro-funk backdrop falls somewhere between Afrika Bambaataa and Newcleus, leaning more towards the latter, while the rap is a mixture of Melle Mel and Kurtis Blow but perhaps more simplistic than anything either spit. That's not necessarily a negative in this case as you wouldn't want a song about hanging out at the beach to be all that profound. Prince slowly and deliberately delivers lines like "Everybody goes there to lay in the sun/And if you are lucky, you can have some fun." This song is as retro-1980's as you can possibly get, so I recommend breaking out the ColecoVision and watching some old episodes of The A-Team to make the experience complete. * http://www.stonesthrow.com/jukebox/arabianprince-beach.mp3 *
