20 Years Ago: The Hot Summer Jams of 1994

As the summer of 2014 starts to wind down, getting inexorably closer to Labor Day on September 1st, today seems like an opportune time to look back at what was hot in hip-hop during the hot summer of 1994. For those of you under the legal drinking age, these jams from my college years may be entirely brand new - but for me they harken back to a time when Will Smith was better known as the Fresh Prince than as one of the Men In Black.

[Suge Knight]Editorial courtesy of Steve 'Flash' Juon:

Video Interview: The Audible Doctor - Dual Threat

Doc: “Audible Doctor is a beast with the mic and the production, laying the groundwork for 50 Cent’s “This Is Murder Not Music” and Joell Ortiz’s “Battle Cry“, as well as holding his own as an emcee on his own tracks assisted by the likes of Consequence, Bumpy Knuckles and Guilty Simpson.

C.F.: "Den Nope" brings a new meaning to the word dope. Its eerie yet electrifying beat mixed with lyrics that help to illustrate a story engulfing the viewer into a world of suspense, all help to piece together a truly unique video that gives us a glimpse into the emerging Northern Virginia rap scene."

Audio: Busdriver - "King Cookie Faced (For Her)"

Trevor: What would Gravity’s Rainbow sound like as a rap album? Here is an album which, if we may, reminds the listener of their whispered allegiances to fundamental realities. The brushstrokes are delicate, stabbing, pointed. The overwhelming crescendo they whirl towards may be one of bitterness, and rightfully so. There is also lightness. A black man is giggling and pointing at you. It may have everything and nothing to do with rap and one’s place in it. Humiliation, no longer a threat—but a reality, has been exhausted. Perfect Hair is what remains.

Audio: Diamond District - "First Step" (@MelloMusicGroup)

MMG: When Diamond District dropped In the Ruff on Mello Music Group in 2009, the gritty drums and grimy raps combined as elementally as hydrogen and oxygen. The D.C. Voltron of Oddisee, yU, and Uptown X.O. dusted off and revitalized a sound once consigned to the catacombs. A half-decade later, the holy trinity has returned with March on Washington. The truth remains timeless. Wisdom over rhythm. Slang turned into testament.
