The more I played this game for Genesis Does, the more conflicted I became. Last Battle is by some accounts among the worst Sega Genesis games of all time, but as I played my way through this Sega title I thought “Meh. It’s mediocre. It’s a bit absurd, but it’s not horrible.” Then as I was doing my research and realized this was a localization of a Fist of the North Star game, and the EXTREME liberties they had taken in porting it to the Western world, I began to understand the localization ITSELF was at fault.
The enemies go flying off the screen because Sega didn’t want blood and gore, the dialogue clearly makes Aarzak (who was originally Kenshiro) sound like an egotistical jerk, and despite trying to make it easier for Westerners to understand they don’t even give you hints on the best branching paths to take from level to level or how to navigate WITHIN a level. It’s not the worst thing I’ve played, but I can’t wait to play the original Japanese version instead. Subscribe to Mistah MegaManFan for new episodes of Genesis Does every Thursday at 8 PM ET!
