Digital Champ has all the hallmarks of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out (or just plain ol’ Punch Out sans the license), but fails to provide the fun that the NES version has, let alone the arcade game that it’s based on. Ironically it’s because the game tries too HARD to be like real boxing, leaving you no room for learning an opponent’s tells or memorizing their patterns for a chance at success.
They dance around so much you can barely land a hit and if you try to power up a punch your odds of it connecting are even worse. This is a case of “we knew we could, but we never stopped to ask if we SHOULD.” Subscribe to Mistah MegaManFan for The PC Engine Files every Tuesday at 8 PM ET.
