In the retro collecting scene I’ve often heard it said that the GameBoy Advance model AGS-101 is superior to the AGS-001 thanks to its backlit screen. The box for the system even touted the “NEW BRIGHTER SCREEN” as a prominent feature, but for whatever reason that never enticed me to upgrade. Perhaps it was because I had a GameBoy Player on GameCube by the time it came out. (GBP release date – June 24, 2003. AGS-101 release date – September 2005.)
I decided to put it to the test though on this week’s short episode of Retro Hunting Adventures since I just picked up a SpongeBob SquarePants style GBA that has the model revision and HOLY CRAP EVERYONE WAS RIGHT. If you were thinking of spending the money to get a GBA retrofitted with a brighter screen or buying a modded GBA for a reseller, you might just want the AGS-101 instead!
